“Confirmation completes the grace of Baptism by a special outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which seal or ‘confirm’ the baptized in unison with Christ and equip them for active participation in the worship and apostolic life of the Church” (The Glossary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church).
By Confirmation, the baptised are more perfectly bound to the Lord Jesus and His Church, and they are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit to be witnesses (or martyrs) of Christ and the truth of His Gospel. It is also the moment when they become full, adult members of the Church. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (paragraph 1303) states that Confirmation brings an increase and deepening of baptismal grace:
- it unites us more firmly to Christ;
- it increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us;
- it renders our bond with the Church more perfect;
- it gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross.
By seeking the Sacrament of Confirmation one is cooperating with his/her baptismal commitment to grow as a disciple of Christ and to train in our Catholic faith.
Our Confirmation programme for youth usually begins in the autumn of each year with the Alpha course and is open to young people aged 14 and above. There is a mandatory Holy Spirit retreat day, and the youth are also expected to volunteer in some of our parish ministries. There will be further training for those who demonstrate a readiness to be an active member of our parish and to take their faith seriously as an intentional disciple of Christ.
If you are interested in being confirmed, then our Confirmation application can be downloaded via the button above (top of page). Once completed, please return it to our Parish Office by the date specified. For more information, or should you have any questions, please contact us.
May the Lord bless you and give you peace!
